Are You Preparing for Eternity or Just This Life?
Share
There’s a question most people don’t stop to ask. Not because it’s complicated… but because it’s uncomfortable. We spend so much of our lives preparing for this world. We set goals. We build careers. We plan for the future. We try to create stability, comfort, and success. And none of that is wrong. But here’s the question that matters more than all of it: Are you doing anything to prepare for eternity?
The Question Jesus Asked That Changes Everything
Jesus didn’t avoid this topic. He addressed it directly:
“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” Mark 8:36
The “whole world” represents everything temporary. The “soul” represents what is eternal Jesus is forcing a comparison, "What are you gaining… and what might you be losing in the process?" Because it is entirely possible to succeed in this life… and be completely unprepared for the next.
When Life Makes It Real
Recently, I lost a friend to cancer. And moments like that strip away illusion. All the things we stress over… All the things we chase…They don’t go with us. Not the money. Not the plans. Not the achievements. What remains is this: What was done for eternity? Scripture reinforces this reality:
“For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.” 1 Timothy 6:7
That is not just philosophy. That is a fixed boundary of human life.
We Were Given a Mission, Not Just a Life to Manage
One of the clearest commands Jesus gave was not about building personal success. It was about eternal impact:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19
This is often misunderstood as something for pastors or leaders. But historically and biblically, this command was given to all followers of Christ. Which raises a necessary question: How much of your life is focused on building your future… and how much is focused on advancing God’s kingdom?
The Tension Most People Avoid
Here’s where it gets uncomfortable, but it needs to be said plainly. We prepare for:
- Retirement
- Emergencies
- Opportunities
- Financial security
But do we prepare for: Standing before God? The eternal condition of our soul? The people we were called to reach? This is not about abandoning responsibility in this life. It’s about recognizing that this life is not the final destination.
Two Ways to Live According to Jesus
Jesus gave a clear framework in Matthew,
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Matthew 6:19–20
From a structural standpoint, this divides life into two investment strategies:
- Temporary Investment: Focused on things that fade, decay, or remain behind.
- Eternal Investment: Focused on what carries beyond this life.
Every day, through our time, attention, and choices… we are actively investing in one or the other.
What Actually Lasts According to Scripture
If we strip everything down, what remains eternal is not material. It is spiritual. That includes:
- People coming to Christ
- Truth being shared
- Acts of obedience to God
- Seeds planted in someone’s life
These are the things that carry forward. Not because they are visible… but because they are eternal in nature.
This Is Not About Guilt. It’s About Alignment
It’s important to be clear here. The Bible does not condemn planning, working, or building a life. But it consistently warns against living as if this world is all there is. The issue is not activity. The issue is priority. Is your life centered only on what you can see…
or anchored in what will last forever?
A Question Worth Sitting With
If everything in your life stopped today… Would what you’ve been building still matter? Or would most of it stay behind?
Final Thought: The Life That Actually Lasts
Your life here is temporary. That’s not meant to create fear. It’s meant to bring clarity. Because you were never created to live only for this world. You were created with eternity in mind. And the most important preparation you will ever make… is not for what happens here. It’s for what happens next.
If this stirred something in you, don’t ignore it. Start small by praying for someone in your life. Sharing truth when the opportunity comes. And recenter your focus on what actually lasts.
